About

I started with a ballpoint pen on paper and moved to paint. I build images along two axes: the line that comes from my body, and the image that comes from literature.

With the pen, I draw short lines. One short line drawn many times becomes a long one, and the layers become texture. My body is used to shaking, so a line gets drawn over and over in short bursts of attention. With the pen held in my mouth, my body becomes the compass: every long straight line bends.

With paint, I tie the brush to my arm instead of holding it in my mouth, and let the movement land on the paper as it is. I can't draw exactly what I intend, so I stopped expecting to. The image is not planned in advance; I find it in what my body has already done.

The artist sitting on a stool in front of the studio wall, looking off to one side. Behind him, paint has run down the wall in blue and violet streaks.
In the studio I tape paper to the wall and draw. Paint that runs past the edge of a sheet stays on the wall.
