The Flowerpot with No Heel

The Flowerpot with No Heel

2018 · Ballpoint pen on paper · 26 × 36 cm

This picture came from the way I am. I walk with my heels off the ground, my weight resting on the balls of my feet. I moved that shape onto a flowerpot. So this flowerpot has no heel.

What I really liked was the idea of wearing a flowerpot. I sometimes thought of flowerpots as shoes, and in one short story I had a character put them on. She walks around a treatment room in them. Flowerpots gave me more to imagine than I expected.

So there are two layers in this picture. One is the layer of reality: my walk, heels lifted. The other is the layer that comes from literature: a character from a story, walking through a treatment room in flowerpots. The picture is a part of how I look, joined to an image I took from a story.

Imagination is not far away. It is close to me, and it changes depending on when and how I find it. All of this was already in the unconscious. I only took it out and looked.
